Whale of a Good Time Eco-Art & Ocean Consciousness
Pemaquid, ME —An exhibition of handmade whale sculptures made from repurposed lobster rope and marine debris and built by nautical artist Cindy Pease Roe will be on display through August 21 at The Good Supply in Pemaquid. The public is invited to join the artist at a reception to be held from 5:30pm—7:30pm on Saturday, July 23 at The Good Supply’s post and beam storefront.
The Good Supply is thrilled to celebrate the achievements of a talented artist. Roe’s whimsical art depicts whales because of their size. To her, they symbolize a big need for clean-up. Spreading the word about ocean consciousness is the motive that drives her advocacy tour, which has included workshops for students as far away as China.
As an extra treat, ocean lovers will delight in a video installation showcasing NOAA research from the Mariana Trench—the world’s deepest part of the ocean located in the western Pacific Ocean. Karl McLetchie, co-proprietor of The Good Supply, also works as an ocean engineer for the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration. This video installation represents his latest work.
There will also be information tables from the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, a nonprofit organization based in Kittery that helped Roe source her materials; the University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center; Boothbay’s Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences; and Ocean’s Wide, an organization that gives high school-aged students insight into the world of ocean exploration.
The Good Supply, a small business known for promoting the work of local artisans, is open for the summer season. Roe’s whales will be on view and for sale from July 23 through August 21. The exhibit is designed to intrigue and delight. Ocean fanatics, their families, marine science buffs, and children will be particularly interested in the show.

About Cindy Pease Roe
A career artist and recent participant in a U.S. State Department tour, Cindy Pease Roe is taking on the role of ocean educator in midcoast Maine. Pairing with the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, a nonprofit organization based in Kittery, Roe has collected materials from Maine’s shoreline for her sculpture. She says, “Expect a lot of lobster rope.”
Roe plans on offering two ‘UpSculpt’ workshops in which trash is turned into artful treasure to coincide with the opening of her art exhibit. The first workshop is to be held at The Ocean Point Marina in East Boothbay on July 23 from 10am–1pm and the second will be in the garden of Granite Hall Store in Round Pond on July 24 from 1pm–4pm.
