Our host is award-winning Maine ceramic artist Tim Christensen, an avid educator and environmentalist who focuses on Sgraffito in porcelain. Of the art form, which is accomplished by decoratively scoring through a layer of slip to reveal the clay below, Tim advises, "Draw around something to depict it." Imagery of Maine nature awaits your interpretation...
In this unique plein air class, participants will learn about everything needed to make gorgeous sgraffito etchings on porcelain at dusk in one of Maine's many beautiful locations.
The session will be held in the early evening on Wednesday, July 1 from 5pm-8pm.
Each participant will be given a cup made by Tim, and if desired, folks may bring their own raw porcelain pieces to decorate.
We will cover the forms with slip and then learn to depict the many textures and values we see in the early Maine spring. Working in black and white to allow for focus on value scales and quality drafting.
Texture, depth of design, negative space, ceramic and sgraffito history, and studio mobility/resilience will be among the covered topics.
Participants should dress for the weather as the class will be held outside. This educational event will be an experience through which art and adventure meet!
Join us in The Good Supply's dooryard at 5pm on July 1, and we will create art in the great coastal woods of Maine together. No experience is necessary, and participants age 16 and above are welcome.
The Good Supply will serve as the central meeting place for the workshop as well as the pick-up location for pieces fired by Tim. (Tim will fire all forms made by him.) Shipping can be arranged if pick-up is not desired. Participants who bring their own forms should plan on firing them.
