Rugged and craggy, the geology of the Bristol Peninsula in Midcoast Maine looks as though the land has been carved away by the sea just as the artist has carved material away to create a block for this print.

A regular visitor to Damariscotta and Monhegan Island, the artist is familiar with the feel of this place. Documenting every turn of land and sea - the Damariscotta River, John's Bay, Christmas Cove, and Boothbay Harbor - this limited run series of prints is a testimony to the drama of the Maine coast south of its renowned Bold Coast.

Molly is a visual artist, map-maker and geographer. She discovered geography at Middlebury College and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Human Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She received a Watson Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to explore the value of map-making for communities and individuals. Molly has worked in environmental and art education for organizations, universities, and schools across the country. Her current projects involve map-making with children, conveying climate change through landscape painting, and custom maps for place-based organizations.

Her work has been featured in The Alpinist, The Middlebury Magazine, The Starbucks Digital Network, and The New York Times.

Clients include: The Nature Conservancy, The American Mountain Guide Association, The World Wildlife Fund, The Trust for Public Land, The Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust, Climber and Writer Majka Burhardt, and the Schoodic Peninsula Visitor's Center.

He later received an MFA in Ceramics and Sculpture in 2015 at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBenjamin is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, OH where he teaches ceramics and sculpture and exhibits his work nationally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom the Artist:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese fish are an exploratory aspect of my artistic practice. The ceramic process of glazing and surface application is often a mystery because of how much glaze materials can transform through the firing process. These fish provide me with a format that lets me play and experiment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe forms are made similarly to an article of clothing. I trace handmade templates on flat sheets of clay and join the edges together to make fish \"blanks\" that I can then alter and apply anatomical, expressive, and imaginative information. The symbols and imagery that are carved into the soft clay are inspired by patterns and colors found on some of my favorite fish as well as patterns and textures found in human-created waste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it's common for sculptural ceramics to be fired many times to achieve the desired result, I limit myself to one bisque firing and one glaze firing. This limitation minimizes my potential energy footprint and makes me feel less conflicted about making environmentally-inspired works. It also challenges me to problem solve ways to achieve glaze surfaces that are as rich in color and texture as I can muster with fewer trips to the kiln. The ceramic process of glazing and surface application is often a mystery because of how much glaze materials can transform through the firing process. These fish provide me with a format that lets me play and experiment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe forms are made similarly to an article of clothing. I trace handmade templates on flat sheets of clay and join the edges together to make fish \"blanks\" that I can then alter and apply anatomical, expressive, and imaginative information. The symbols and imagery that are carved into the soft clay are inspired by patterns and colors found on some of my favorite fish as well as patterns and textures found in human-created waste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it's common for sculptural ceramics to be fired many times to achieve the desired result, I limit myself to one bisque firing and one glaze firing. This limitation minimizes my potential energy footprint and makes me feel less conflicted about making environmentally-inspired works. It also challenges me to problem solve ways to achieve glaze surfaces that are as rich in color and texture as I can muster with fewer trips to the kiln.
