Win a pot of gelt this Hanukkah! For generations, children of the Jewish faith have launched this four-sided spinning top guessing as to which Hebrew letter will be shown on top when it stops.

The toy and game symbolize the 'Festival of Lights' not only due to modern traditions. It's the Hebrew letters themselves, which help identify "the miracle that happened there." The miracle occurred when a single day's quantity of oil lasted for eight days as the ancient Jews obtained religious freedom from the Greeks. The place referenced is Israel.

Friends of any age can play Dreidel, and there is no limit as to the number of players. To play, each player is given an equal number of gelt - chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil - or some other treat. A pot of shared gelt is included in the middle to win or put into.

Players take turns spinning the dreidel, and depending on which Hebrew letter shows on top, players (1) Do nothing. (2) Take all the gelt in the pot. (3) Take half of the pot. (4) Put a piece of gelt into the pot. When a player runs out of gelt, they are out of the game.

If you are ready to try your luck in a pastime that dates back nearly 2200 years, we hope you enjoy this brightly-colored dreidel as one way to celebrate the season of Hanukkah.

Maple Landmark has been making eco-friendly, educational wooden toys, games, and gifts since 1979 at their shop in Middlebury, Vermont. We met them at a New England Made trade fair in 2017 and couldn't resist their sustainably-harvested hardwood products.

The company seeks to honor the unique history and tradition of New England, from the mills built by the early settlers to the furniture and novelty factories of the 1900’s.

Maple Landmark founder and owner Mike Rainville first came to woodworking as a hobby in the 1970’s. When it was clear that working with wood had permanently hooked Mike, he set up the workshop that would eventually be home to a thriving family business.

The choice “Maple Landmark” as the name for the business was a natural extension of the name Mike’s family used for their maple sugaring business and dairy farm, Maple Landmark Homestead. His grandfather, Fletcher Brown made maple syrup for over 65 years.
