My Life in the Maine Woods is a forthright memoir by Annette Jackson, a game warden’s wife, recounting her experiences during the 1930s when she, her husband, and their children lived in a small cabin on the shore of Umsaskis Lake in the north woods of Maine.

Jackson, an avid sportswoman and nature lover, writes of hunting, fishing, campfire cooking, and the sounds of the wilderness through the seasons. She visits trappers and woodsmen, and tells what it’s like to sleep on a bed of pine boughs under the stars that shine on the legendary Allagash.

This new edition expands on Jackson’s original including not only new photographs, author biography, and foreword, but also new material from Jackson and revisions she made following its original publication.

Annette Jackson (1906-1971) grew up in Maine’s North Woods. She met Dave Jackson, a game warden at Umsaskis Lake in the Allagash Wilderness area, in 1930 and they were married two years later. While raising children, hunting, fishing and enjoying herself, Jackson also started to write about her experiences, and My Life in the Maine Woods was first published in 1954. She also wrote a popular newspaper column, “The Wisdom of the Timberlands” for a northern Maine newspaper.

They strive to capture and explore the grit, heart, beauty, and infectious spirit of the region by telling tales, real and imagined, that can be appreciated in many forms by readers, dreamers, and adventurers everywhere.

Almost 25 years ago, publisher Dean Lunt started Islandport Press in his Yarmouth basement and shipped early book orders from his garage, at times in temperatures so cold he had to plug in spot heaters so the tape would stick to the cardboard boxes. Today, Islandport Press has published more than 200 titles, not only original works, but also out-of-print books that they have revived and brought new attention for both the book and the author. Finding hidden gems, whether in the guise of a new author or a forgotten classic, is something in which they take great pride.
