Here in Maine we’re all about birds. Summer mornings are full of song from backyards treetops to the call of gulls along the coast. The hardy little Chickadee is at our feeders all winter singing it’s namesake. Watching the birds is a relaxing and occasionally exciting activity - have you ever seen dueling hummingbirds? The flocking Robins picking through the grass and the skiddering Sandpiper pecking in the sand. You may start to notice their personalities, schedules, and habits. Each species has unique characteristics.

Charlie Buzby’s folk art carvings are both a study of our avian neighbors and an homage to an age old craft. Carving birds, as decoys or decorative objects, has been a pastime for hundreds of years. His creations, each sitting on their driftwood perch are at the same time classic and contemporary. Each simple form, with it’s knowing stance and inquisitive charm, is a welcome addition to any home or office.

Charlie Buzby’s carvings tell a story of beauty in simplicity, love of nature, and of patience. In his home studio in New Harbor, Maine, Buzby finds inspiration in the natural world, with birds, owls, whales and fish being his primary subjects. The carvings are carefully mounted on pieces of driftwood which he finds on walks along Pemaquid Beach. Each carving is unique in character and no two are alike. Part of the joy in his work is to create new and individual creations, each with their own charm.

A self-taught artisan, he picked up the craft after meeting woodcarver Jim Bolf while on a family vacation. He was inspired to learn and strengthen the skill of his new hobby over the years. After retiring in 2008, Buzby found more time to devote to his art, so he set up a woodcarving studio at his home where his creativity flourishes.
